Catamaran to Île aux Bénitiers

Boats leave the La Gaulette / Le Morne side for a day in the southwest lagoon. Typical ingredients: sail or motor to Île aux Bénitiers, a pause at Crystal Rock, swimming, lunch on board or on the sand. Many itineraries add dolphin watching in the bay. Prefer skippers who observe from a distance; chasing animals is not a souvenir. The island landing can be crowded at midday — walk the beach away from the tables. Confirm: hotel pickup, lunch, drinks, snorkel kit, and what happens if the sea cancels.

East · Trou d’Eau Douce

Boat to Île aux Cerfs

From Trou d’Eau Douce, boats run to Île aux Cerfs all day in season. A catamaran day is slower and more expensive; a shared skipper is how many Mauritian families actually go. Packages that add GRSE waterfall, Île de la Passe, and a fixed lunch are a different product — longer, more moving, more upsell. If the east is windy, the lagoon can still work when the west is glassy; that is why this island exists as a weather hedge, not because it is ‘better sand than the west’.

Grand Baie · Coin de Mire

Northern islets sail

This is the north’s answer to Bénitiers: a day on the water when you are based in Grand Baie or Trou aux Biches. You will photograph Coin de Mire. You may snorkel. You should not be promised Round Island. Sea state north of the island is the honest cancellation reason. Good for first-timers who want a boat day without crossing to the southwest.

Southeast · snorkel that is actually a park

Blue Bay marine park

Blue Bay is a marine park, not a free-for-all reef. That is why it still has coral worth looking at compared with some hotel house reefs. Go with a licensed boat or from the public beach when conditions allow. Do not stand on coral. Do not take shells. Combine with Mahebourg waterfront, not with a same-day race to Le Morne.

Northeast · mangrove and snorkel

Île d’Ambre lagoon

Boats from the Flacq / northeast side run to Île d’Ambre when sea and permits allow. Mangrove and lagoon are the product. The east takes the trades — a skipper who cancels is doing the job. Pair with an east stay. Do not stack it with Le Morne the same afternoon.

Southwest · culture first

Le Morne summit (or the view)

The summit is exposed, steep in places, and a bad idea in heat, rain, or late starts. Guides exist; so does turning back. Many visitors do better standing on the peninsula, swimming the lagoon, and reading why the mountain is inscribed. Kite beach at the foot is a different activity again. Do not mix ‘quick summit’ with a Port Louis morning.

Heat injury, falls, private land at the foot. Not a family stroll.

Reputable guide if you are not a confident hiker. The viewpoint is free of a summit ticket.

North inland · family shade

SSR Botanic Garden, Pamplemousses

The botanic garden at Pamplemousses is one of the few inland stops that earns a first-time morning: shade, talipot and royal palms, Victoria amazonica lilies when the ponds cooperate, and a sense that Mauritius is more than a reef. Combine with the north; do not add Chamarel the same day.

Capital · dodo, stamps, indenture

Port Louis museum morning

This is how you give children and adults a country instead of a buffet. Aapravasi Ghat is small and essential. The Blue Penny Museum at Caudan holds the 1847 ‘Post Office’ stamps. The Natural History Museum is the dodo conversation — reconstructions, not a complete original skeleton. Pair with Central Market before it winds down. Not a Sunday plan.

North · the rare late street

Grand Baie after dinner

Grand Baie and nearby Pereybère have the densest evening strip: bars, late food, boat touts. It is useful and it is not the soul of the country. Caudan in Port Louis has a safer, shorter waterfront evening. Most south and west villages go quiet after dinner — that is civic rhythm, not a failed night. Standard drink-spiking caution in tourist bars. Book a registered taxi back; do not walk dark beach lanes.

Petty theft, poorly lit side streets, unregistered taxis at closing time.

Tamarin · Le Morne · morning

Dolphin bay, west coast

Early boats from the Tamarin / La Gaulette side run into the bay where spinner dolphins often travel. A decent skipper slows, keeps distance, and lets you look. A bad one guns the engines and dumps people in the water. We do not sell ‘guaranteed swim with dolphins’. If the animals are not there, that is the honest day — you still have the lagoon. Combine with a Bénitiers afternoon only if the sea and your energy allow; most people should pick one boat day.

Wild animals. No touching, no chasing. Cancel in rough swell. Weak swimmers stay on deck.

Southwest inland · one morning

Chamarel coloured earths and waterfall

Chamarel is the inland stop first-timers actually enjoy: the mineral dunes, the viewpoint over the waterfall, sometimes the tortoise park next door. Go early. Midday coaches stack. Pair with Le Morne the same day if you stay west; do not add Port Louis and Pamplemousses. The ‘seven colours’ are geology, not magic. Tickets are on site or in a combo tour.

Park · native forest

Black River Gorges hike

Black River Gorges National Park is where the island still has native forest. Macchabée, Alexandra Falls viewpoint, or a longer trail if you are fit. Start early, carry water, expect mist. This is not a stroller loop. Combine with Chamarel if you are already inland; do not race back for a sunset catamaran the same afternoon unless the hike was short.

Mud, drop-offs, sudden rain. Not flip-flops.

Self-drive or a guide. Park access is not a GYG ticket by default.

West · family adrenaline

Casela / safari park day

Casela Nature Parks is the west’s big paid family day: safari bus, some animal encounters, zip and quad if you pay extras. It is a park, not the wild. Read the encounter ethics before you book a walk. Combine with Flic en Flac beach after, not with Chamarel the same morning.

Inland · Tamarind Falls

7 Waterfalls short loop

The short loop is the version most visitors can finish: forest, pools, several drops. It is a hike. Start early, expect mud, do not treat it as a viewpoint selfie stop. A guided ticket is how most first-timers do it without getting lost. Do not stack Chamarel + this + a catamaran in one day.
