Tamarin sits where a west-coast river meets the lagoon, with a village centre that still feels like a place people live. Salt pans are part of the historical landscape of this coast (the Rivière Noire district has a long salt-making story). The bay can have surf when other west beaches are flat. Dolphin watching operates from this coast; some trips crowd animals. We do not recommend chasing pods. Come for the village, the light, and a slower west day that is not a resort strip.

The story
Black River district combined salt, fishing, hunting hinterland, and later tourism. Tamarin is a hinge between the hotel west and the wilder southwest toward Le Morne. The river mouth makes it hydrologically unlike a simple lagoon beach.
What to look for
River meeting sea, remnant salt pans in the wider area, and the mountain wall inland.
Best time to visit
Morning village; sunset light. Dolphin hours are early — only with a careful operator, or skip.
How to get there
West coast between Flic en Flac and Grande Rivière Noire. Natural on a southwest day.
