Agree fares. Official airport rank. Left-hand traffic. Buses are real; they will not get you to Chamarel at dawn.
01 · Every ride
No meter? Say the fare.
Agree in rupees before you sit. If a driver claims the meter is broken, treat it as a negotiation, not a tragedy. Hotel taxis cost more and show up.
02 · Arrival
Airport: official rank or pre-book
Ignore lobby touts. Pre-booked hotel or licensed transfer is the boring, correct move. Affiliate slot is for when you have a partner — not a random Facebook driver.
03 · Shoestring
Buses are real
Town to town, cheap, slow, and not a Chamarel-dawn tool. Metro Express serves the plateau–Port Louis corridor. Both are safer than an argumentative night taxi if you understand the last departure.
04 · Independence
Hire a car if you will move daily
Left-hand traffic, narrow village roads, and Port Louis peak hours. International driving permit rules: check what your licence country needs before you fly. Parking at beaches is part of the day.
