    UNESCO depot where indenture was trialled. Small site, outsized country. Weekday morning, then the market. Do not treat it as a five-minute photo between Caudan shops.

    The silhouette is the cultural landscape. The summit is a hike. Standing on the peninsula at late light is enough for a first visit. Do not stack it with Port Louis the same morning.

    A public beach, not only a hotel ribbon

    Mont Choisy, Flic en Flac (day), Belle Mare, Blue Bay — pick one region and stay. Hotel sand is convenient. Public sand is how you see families on Sunday. Shade, vendors, and a bus stop are features.

    Port Louis Central Market on a trading morning

    Produce, pickles, both-ends of the price range. Watch bags. Eat where the queue is Mauritian. Combine with the Ghat. Skip it on a public holiday.

    One lagoon day on a boat

    Île aux Bénitiers from the west, Île aux Cerfs from the east, or a north sail past Coin de Mire. One of these, not all three. Confirm inclusions. Walk away from the stall end of Bénitiers.

    Pamplemousses garden in the shade

    Lilies, palms, a historic botanic garden. It teaches that Mauritius has an interior. Pair with the north, never with Chamarel the same day.

    One history room: Ghat or the dodo

    Aapravasi Ghat if you want the country’s people. The Natural History Museum if you want the bird that only lived here. Both beat a duty-free hour.

    Split-pea chilli fritters, still hot, stuffed in bread. Market and bus-station hours. If they are pale under a lamp at 14:00, walk on. This is breakfast, not a tasting menu.

    Rougaille, rice, thyme, chilli. Chamarel and village kitchens beat a ‘Creole corner’ at the resort. Ask how hot. We do not print a fake ‘best restaurant in Mauritius’ list — that is usually an affiliate dressed as journalism.

    Port Louis Sino-Mauritian counters. Wok heat, steam, chilli vinegar. A plate, not a fusion room. Combine with the Ghat and the market. Do not make it a 22:00 nightclub detour.

    Two biscuits, jam, pink icing. Curepipe, Quatre Bornes, Rose Hill cabinets. Tea-time, not Italy. Buy two. They crumble in a hot bag.

    Cold milk, basil seeds, ice. Market-side heat defence. The seeds are meant to be there. If it tastes only of syrup, you have the tourist cousin.
