An island without people
Mauritius had no indigenous human population. The dodo, giant tortoises, and a dry forest that is now almost gone lived here first. Every later story — Dutch, French, British, Indian, African, Chinese, Creole — is an arrival story. That is why the bird in the museum is not a mascot. It is the first casualty of us.
