Vieux Grand Port
The Dutch established their first settlement on this south-east shore in the 17th century. The French later made Grand Port a harbour of consequence. In August 1810 the Battle of Grand Port — a French victory over the British at sea — was fought in this bay; it is the naval action Napoleonic memory still bothers to name in the Indian Ocean. The present village is quiet. Ruins and a museum presence exist; quality of display can vary. Come for the geography of first contact and a harbour that is not Port Louis. Combine with Mahebourg and Blue Bay.

The story
Everyone's Mauritius story starts with Port Louis because that is the surviving capital. The older colonial door was this bay. The 1810 battle briefly reversed British momentum in the campaign for Isle de France, which the British nonetheless took later that year. The landscape remembers more than the visitor economy does.

How to get there
