Pieter Both
Pieter Both is the theatrical peak of the Moka range: a pinnacle with a boulder perched on top. It is named after Pieter Both, first Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies, who died in a shipwreck off Mauritius in 1615. The mountain is a landmark from Port Louis and the plateau. Climbing the final pinnacle is a technical outing, not a family walk. Le Pouce ('the thumb') nearby is the more reasonable hike for views of the capital. If you are not a climber, the gift is the silhouette.

The summit pinnacle is a technical climb with exposure. Unqualified attempts kill and injure. Hire a qualified local guide or do not go beyond viewpoints. Weather, rock and route change the risk.
The story
Dutch Mauritius was a refreshment station, not a settler colony on the later French/British scale. The wreck of Pieter Both is one of the named Dutch ghosts on the map. The peak became a colonial picturesque cliché — and remains a genuine mountain.
