Champ de Mars is not a countryside course. It is an oval dropped into Port Louis, under the Citadel, with mountains behind. Racing here dates to 1812. On race days you see a Mauritian public culture that is not staged for visitors: dress, betting, family groups, food. On non-race days it is a green lung and a geography lesson. Check the racing calendar; do not assume every weekend is a meet. Gambling laws and enclosure rules apply — this is not a tip to flout them.

The story
