Blue Bay Marine Park
Blue Bay, near Mahebourg in the south-east, is a marine park with a pretty lagoon and a conservation designation that is supposed to mean something. Glass-bottom boats and snorkel trips operate here. Quality varies. The park exists because the lagoon is sensitive, not because it needs more engines. If you go, choose operators who brief you on not standing on coral, and skip crowding a small patch of reef at midday. Mahebourg waterfront the same day is the adult way to see the south-east.

A designated marine park in the southeast lagoon. The coral is in better shape than many hotel house reefs because it is protected, not because it is secret.

The story
South-east Mauritius is historically Dutch first landing and French Grand Port. The lagoon here is not 'the other Île aux Cerfs'. It is a park next to a still-working town (Mahebourg) that tourists often skip for the north.

Clear water on a calm morning, designated zones, and coral you do not touch.
Best time to visit
Morning, calmer seas. Windy afternoons chop the lagoon.
How to get there
South-east, near the airport — actually convenient on arrival or departure day if you are not exhausted. Not a side trip from Flic en Flac.

Public beach access versus paid boat trips are different. Compare boat prices; we do not print a number that will be wrong next season.
Time needed
2–3 hours if you snorkel; a full south-east half-day with Mahebourg.
